I picked up copy of this 2 cd set last night at the Minneapolis gig. Because I only have the old vinyl, it gets listened to rarely, so it became a logical purchase and a decent way to support the band as well
This is a 2013 Purple Pyramid release, not the Bellaphon import from 1993.

The first cd is the original Album. I am note sure that any remastering has been done here. It sounded clear and clean (and no doubt a slight up-grade from the clicks and pops of my 40 year old vinyl. The treat, however, just has to be the 1971 bootleg of the entire album from Darmstadt Germany. I have a copy of the a bootleg from the night (which also has the 1974 Dream Nebula) I need to drag mine out now and do a compare. The official bootleg in the commercial release is certainly superb and as I say is worth the price of the cd alone. If you don't have the Journey on CD or digital, you must pick up a copy. I guess we better count Darmstadt as officially not available ofo trading.

I also want to say that the commentary booklet and the pirtures insider are great.

First, thanks for the warm welcome, and the thorough response. It helps more than somewhat!!!!

I appreciate the insight to ATitO. At this point, I am more interested in the different mixes than I am the early versions of songs that eventually got released anyway. So I will be seeking out the 2004 Eclectic release.

I do still have a question about the live versions of RTF on the "deluxe" version; is that the classic lineup, or are those from Brazil as well (or some other date post 2004)? I HATE when bands don't give the info like that. It makes all the difference in the world to many fans (like me). I actually have both of the RTF; I also have the Eclectic remaster as well. I probably won't be springing for both on the ATitO releases.

Thank you again for the prompt, thorough reply. It is much appreciated!!!!!!

First Bill. a big welcome to the "project".... take a look around our discography section...
if you click http://www.thenektarproject.com/discography/boston.aspx there are a few audio
clips from our original 1970 Boston Tapes, plus a summary of Nektar during that Boston episode.
There never was an actual album in original form (w/cover, notes etc.) however it was briefly made available to fans as a download option in 2006. Many songs were re-recorded onto SLT in 1973.
The "deluxe ATitO" is not as complete as the 2004 Eclectic remastered release, which has both the
German and American mixes on it. The original release was the German mix (for Europe + USA imports), the later 1976 American mix was for an official Passport release in the USA .....4 years later.
Likewise for the "deluxe RTF" ... the Eclectic remaster (2002) had radio promo versions of
Lonely Roads and Let it Grow as bonus tracks, while this later re-issue of RTF on Cleopatra adds live tracks from Brazil in 2005, featuring Roye & Ron with Randy Dembo on bass and Tom Hughes on keys,
..........Randy & Tom left the band in 2006. The "original" line-up has not played since 2002/3.
Hope that helps somewhat.

So, for a new-bie just getting into the classic recordings of the band,

- the new "deluxe"editions are sanctioned by roye, but not the remaining members of the classic line-up
- Sound is not better (and could theoretically be worse) than the last "fully sanctioned" releases

I might be sticking with the previous versions then, but I have a few questions:

On the deluxe RTF, I know the second live disk is the "new" band in 2005, but does anyone know where the live RTtF cuts are from, and who is on them?

On the deluxe ATitO, are the Boston Tapes available elsewhere?

Hi Mick,

Fully understand your view and you are probably right in what you say. However there is one sure thing that will always be there ; the legacy of some fine music and of course the memories of those gigs back in the '70's for those that were there - OK that's two things!

All the best

Adam,
Most of us are watching from a safe distance now, because the "pilot light" has burnt us too many times.
Although our original chemistry regained momentum in 2002, it was a volatile combination which proved too unstable to survive. The expiration dates of vital ingredients have long since passed, while the funding for innovative technologies disappeared along with that momentum, .... that's life!
There were numerous opportunities to compromise, yet too many differences to overcome, so it seems the hopes and dreams of many have been raised and crushed to the point of no return,
especially now, in this combination of a lousy economy, free music enterprise and us all being in our sixties.
  Thanks for the memories.

This is all very interesting -- I'm a fan of long standing: wore a Nektar t-shirt in high school, saw them with Mike at the Uptown Theatre in Chicago in '77 and then Roye's version at the Lone Star in NYC in 1980 or so. I got a short-lived stint with the Rough Guide to Rock by doing a bit on Nektar as my "audition" piece and, when I stood with so many fans at the Astoria and watched the full reunion I thought "This is it, the start of something, finally". Except it wasn't, and things fell apart pretty swiftly from there, what with Roy Clay's obvious obfuscations, Roye's outrageous defence of him (closing down the message boards and flaming anyone who dared question him) and the subsequent promise of re-re releases of stuff we already had (did they ever re-do Prodigal Son with Ron on drums? That was mooted and sounded totally unnecessary to me). I wandered off, disillusioned then, and recently got to wondering what was happening and noticed the re-re release of the Live in NYC. Puzzled at what this was all about, I find myself here, and it looks like what I feared has come to pass. It's a sad, ignominious end to a once-great band. I will always treasure my (excellent) Eclectic releases and the memory of buying RTF and TitO on vinyl and listening to them for the first time. I will always listen to them -- I just burnt my Live in NY to my new music player to carry with me -- but it looks like this is definitely the end of the road. It's doubly tragic as, that night at the Astoria, it all looked like Nektar would be able to re-claim the crown they'd so cruelly missed out on. Maybe it will still happen. Maybe. I'd still like to think so. But I'll definitely be watching from a safe distance.]]>

I was trying to get a detailed track listing (that includes recording details) of Retrospektive but couldn't find one. So it's all previously released material plus two Rainbows tracks? Thanks for the info - don't need it then.

Noticed an ebay seller called cleo_store1992 that is selling it for 29 USD or so.

It seems most of us feel the same about what is happening to the Nektar legacy now. I think it's better for my heart if I just stop reading the 'Cleopatra Records' section here and stick to < 2003... ;)

My own recordings of Zoetermeer and Bonn 2004 are about the last shows I have. Just checked - two more 2004 shows, two from 2005, and one from 2006. That'll be it.

I will not spend any money on those re-re-releases. I hate that mixing of new and old recordings of different bands.

I agree period. I don't even consider the current band worthy of downloading any live torrents anymore. After 2004 I would at least grab one or two shows just for historical purposes, not anymore. Following Mick's and others set-list from the last tour, the set-list hasn't changed at all for many years. They start out doing a lot of songs and always wind up with a short concert with mostly book of days songs.

It is a shame really as their catalog is immense!

Some of the re-releases are from the classic catalog mixed in with live versions from the post 2004 bands.

IMHO
